Ingredients
Scale
Meat
- 1 pound ground beef
- 6 strips bacon, diced
Vegetables
- 1/2 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
Dairy
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
- 4 large eggs
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
Condiments & Seasonings
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Optional Garnishes
- Chopped green onions
- Diced tomatoes
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare it for baking the casserole.
- Cook Bacon: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the diced bacon until crisp. Remove bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside, leaving the bacon grease in the skillet for added flavor.
- Sauté Onion and Garlic: Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the bacon grease in the skillet, cooking until the onion is translucent and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes.
- Cook Ground Beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet with the onions and garlic. Cook thoroughly until browned and no longer pink. Drain excess grease to keep the casserole from being greasy.
- Combine Meat and Bacon: Stir the cooked bacon back into the beef mixture and set aside to cool slightly.
- Prepare Egg Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper until smooth and fully combined.
- Assemble Casserole: Spread the beef and bacon mixture evenly in a greased 8×8-inch baking dish.
- Add Cheese Layer: Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the meat mixture.
- Pour Egg Mixture: Pour the prepared egg mixture evenly over the cheese and meat, allowing it to soak into the mixture.
- Top with Cheese: Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese on top.
- Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the casserole is set, cheese is bubbly, and the top is golden brown.
- Cool and Garnish: Remove from oven and allow to cool for a few minutes. Optionally, garnish with chopped green onions and diced tomatoes before serving.
Notes
- Make sure to drain excess grease after browning the beef to avoid a greasy casserole.
- Use freshly shredded cheese for better melting and flavor compared to pre-shredded.
- Adjust seasoning to taste with salt and pepper before baking.
- This casserole can be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated before baking.
- For a lower-fat version, substitute half-and-half instead of heavy cream and use lean ground beef.
