Description

A hearty and satisfying bacon cheeseburger casserole that combines ground beef, crispy bacon, and cheddar cheese baked together with a creamy egg mixture for a delicious and comforting meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 6 strips bacon, diced

Vegetables

  • 1/2 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Dairy

  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

Condiments & Seasonings

  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Optional Garnishes

  • Chopped green onions
  • Diced tomatoes

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare it for baking the casserole.
  2. Cook Bacon: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the diced bacon until crisp. Remove bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside, leaving the bacon grease in the skillet for added flavor.
  3. Sauté Onion and Garlic: Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the bacon grease in the skillet, cooking until the onion is translucent and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Cook Ground Beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet with the onions and garlic. Cook thoroughly until browned and no longer pink. Drain excess grease to keep the casserole from being greasy.
  5. Combine Meat and Bacon: Stir the cooked bacon back into the beef mixture and set aside to cool slightly.
  6. Prepare Egg Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper until smooth and fully combined.
  7. Assemble Casserole: Spread the beef and bacon mixture evenly in a greased 8×8-inch baking dish.
  8. Add Cheese Layer: Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the meat mixture.
  9. Pour Egg Mixture: Pour the prepared egg mixture evenly over the cheese and meat, allowing it to soak into the mixture.
  10. Top with Cheese: Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese on top.
  11. Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the casserole is set, cheese is bubbly, and the top is golden brown.
  12. Cool and Garnish: Remove from oven and allow to cool for a few minutes. Optionally, garnish with chopped green onions and diced tomatoes before serving.

Notes

  • Make sure to drain excess grease after browning the beef to avoid a greasy casserole.
  • Use freshly shredded cheese for better melting and flavor compared to pre-shredded.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste with salt and pepper before baking.
  • This casserole can be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated before baking.
  • For a lower-fat version, substitute half-and-half instead of heavy cream and use lean ground beef.
