Description

This delightful Berry French Toast Casserole is the perfect make-ahead breakfast or brunch dish. Layers of cubed French bread, fresh mixed berries, and a rich custard bake together to create a deliciously comforting meal that’s sure to impress.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread and Berries:

  • 1 loaf (about 14 oz) day-old French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 cups mixed fresh berries (blueberries, raspberries, sliced strawberries)

Custard:

  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Additional:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (for greasing dish)
  • powdered sugar (optional, for serving)
  • maple syrup (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dish: Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter. Layer half of the bread cubes and berries in the dish.
  2. Mix the Custard: Whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugars, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt. Pour over the bread and berries.
  3. Chill and Bake: Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Bake at 350°F for 45-50 minutes until set.
  4. Serve: Let cool, dust with powdered sugar, and serve with maple syrup.

Notes

  • You can use frozen berries if fresh are not available—just thaw and drain them first.
  • Challah or brioche can be used instead of French bread.
  • For a crunchier topping, sprinkle with a cinnamon streusel before baking.
