Bread and Berries:
- 1 loaf (about 14 oz) day-old French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 2 cups mixed fresh berries (blueberries, raspberries, sliced strawberries)
Custard:
- 6 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Additional:
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (for greasing dish)
- powdered sugar (optional, for serving)
- maple syrup (for serving)
Instructions
- Prepare the Dish: Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter. Layer half of the bread cubes and berries in the dish.
- Mix the Custard: Whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugars, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt. Pour over the bread and berries.
- Chill and Bake: Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Bake at 350°F for 45-50 minutes until set.
- Serve: Let cool, dust with powdered sugar, and serve with maple syrup.
Notes
- You can use frozen berries if fresh are not available—just thaw and drain them first.
- Challah or brioche can be used instead of French bread.
- For a crunchier topping, sprinkle with a cinnamon streusel before baking.
