Description

This Better-Than-Takeout Beef with Broccoli recipe features tender slices of flank steak stir-fried with vibrant broccoli in a savory, slightly sweet oyster-hoisin sauce. Ready in just 25 minutes, it’s a perfect homemade Asian-inspired dish that rivals your favorite takeout. Served over steamed white rice, this dish balances bold flavors with simple ingredients for a satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Beef Marinade

  • 1 lb (450g) flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Main Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
  • 4 cups broccoli florets
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced

Sauce

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce (divided)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup oyster sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup beef broth or water
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Serving

  • Cooked white rice, for serving

Instructions

  1. Marinate the Beef: In a medium bowl, combine the thinly sliced beef with 1 tablespoon soy sauce and 1 tablespoon cornstarch. Toss to coat evenly and allow it to marinate for 10-15 minutes to enhance flavor and tenderness.
  2. Cook the Beef: Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the marinated beef and stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until the beef is browned and cooked through. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside to keep warm.
  3. Prepare the Broccoli: In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil. Add the broccoli florets and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until they become bright green and slightly tender but retain their crispness.
  4. Add Garlic: Add the minced garlic to the skillet with the broccoli and stir-fry for an additional 1 minute until fragrant, taking care not to burn the garlic.
  5. Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the remaining 1/4 cup soy sauce, 1 tablespoon cornstarch, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, beef broth (or water), sesame oil, and crushed red pepper flakes if using. This sauce will provide the dish’s signature savory-sweet flavor and help thicken the mixture.
  6. Combine and Cook: Return the cooked beef to the skillet with the broccoli and garlic. Pour the prepared sauce over the ingredients and stir continuously until the sauce thickens and evenly coats the beef and broccoli. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to marry the flavors thoroughly.
  7. Serve: Serve the beef and broccoli hot over cooked white rice for a complete and satisfying meal.

Notes

  • Use flank steak or sirloin for tender and flavorful beef slices that cook quickly.
  • Ensure the broccoli is crisp-tender by not overcooking during stir-frying.
  • Adjust crushed red pepper flakes according to your spice preference, or omit if you prefer mild flavors.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute soy sauce and hoisin sauce with gluten-free alternatives.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
