Ingredients
Scale
Fish and Marinade
- 4 white fish fillets (such as tilapia, cod, or snapper)
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 1 tablespoon green onions, sliced
- Sesame seeds (for garnish)
Cooking Oil
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for cooking)
Instructions
- Prepare the Marinade: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, honey, minced garlic, grated ginger, and hoisin sauce until fully combined to create a flavorful marinade.
- Marinate the Fish: Place the fish fillets in a shallow dish or resealable bag, pour the marinade over them ensuring even coverage, and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes, up to 30 minutes to infuse the flavors.
- Heat the Skillet: Preheat a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat and add the vegetable oil, allowing it to get hot but not smoking to prepare for searing the fish.
- Cook the Fish: Remove fish from the marinade, reserving the marinade. Place fillets in the hot skillet carefully, cooking for about 3–4 minutes on each side until the exterior is crispy and the fish is cooked through to opaque.
- Finish with Marinade: During the last minute of cooking, pour the reserved marinade over the fish to warm it and enhance the glaze and flavor.
- Garnish the Dish: Remove the fish from the skillet and garnish immediately with sliced green onions and a sprinkle of sesame seeds for added texture and fresh taste.
- Serve: Serve the Asian inspired fish hot alongside steamed rice or your favorite side dishes for a complete meal.
Notes
- Marinating the fish longer (up to 30 minutes) allows deeper flavor absorption but avoid over-marinating to prevent texture changes.
- You can substitute the white fish with firm fish like halibut or sea bass if preferred.
- Use a well-seasoned cast iron skillet for best results to prevent sticking and achieve a nice crust.
- Adjust the honey quantity to taste if you prefer sweeter or less sweet flavors.
- This recipe pairs well with steamed vegetables or Asian-style salads for a balanced meal.
