Description

This Classic Patty Melt Recipe brings together savory ground beef patties, caramelized onions, and Swiss cheese, all grilled between slices of rye bread for a deliciously nostalgic meal.

Ingredients

Scale

For Caramelized Onions:

  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

For Patties:

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Additional:

  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (for grilling)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: Heat 1 tablespoon of butter and vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook onions until golden, about 20–25 minutes. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the Patties: Season beef with garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Form into 4 patties and cook in the skillet until done, about 3–4 minutes per side. Set aside.
  3. Assemble the Sandwiches: Layer bread, cheese, patty, caramelized onions, more cheese, and bread. Grill in butter until golden and cheese melts, about 3–4 minutes per side.
  4. Serve: Slice and enjoy warm.

Notes

  • Try cheddar or American cheese for a different flavor twist.
  • Pair with pickles or fries for a classic diner experience.
