Description

This Classic Steak Pie features tender beef stew meat cooked in a savory mushroom gravy, all encased in a flaky puff pastry crust. Perfectly browned and baked to golden perfection, this comforting dish is ideal for a hearty meal that serves four.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 lb beef stew meat, cubed
  • 1 large onion, chopped

Gravy and Seasoning

  • 1 (1 oz) packet dry mushroom gravy mix
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil

Pastry and Finishing

  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to prepare for baking the pie.
  2. Brown Beef: Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the cubed beef stew meat and brown on all sides to lock in flavor.
  3. Sauté Onions: Add the chopped onion to the skillet and cook until softened, enhancing the savory base of your gravy.
  4. Make Gravy: Stir in the dry mushroom gravy mix, 1 cup of water, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Simmer the mixture for 10 to 15 minutes until it thickens into a rich gravy.
  5. Transfer Filling: Pour the beef and gravy mixture into a baking or pie dish, spreading it evenly.
  6. Cover with Pastry: Lay the thawed puff pastry sheet over the filling and press the edges to seal the pie completely.
  7. Apply Egg Wash: Beat the egg with 1 tablespoon of water to create an egg wash. Brush it evenly over the pastry to achieve a golden gloss when baked.
  8. Bake Pie: Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed.
  9. Rest and Serve: Allow the pie to rest for a few minutes after baking before slicing and serving to let the filling set slightly.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, consider adding a splash of red wine to the gravy mixture while simmering.
  • Ensure the puff pastry is fully thawed before use to prevent cracking.
  • You can prepare the filling in advance and refrigerate overnight for convenience.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
