Description

This Creamed Cabbage and Ground Beef Casserole is a hearty and comforting dish perfect for family dinners. Combining tender cabbage sautéed with ground beef, creamy mushroom soup, and a cheesy topping baked to golden perfection, this casserole is full of rich flavors and easy to prepare in under an hour.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium head of cabbage, chopped into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Sauce and Seasoning

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup (or cream of celery or chicken soup)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (or to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Optional: 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (for a bit of heat)

Topping and Cooking Fat

  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter for cooking

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ground Beef: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil or butter over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat and set aside.
  2. Cook the Vegetables: In the same skillet, add the chopped onions and garlic. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until the onions are soft and fragrant. Add the chopped cabbage and cook, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage begins to soften and reduce in size, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Make the Sauce: Once the cabbage is tender, stir in the cream of mushroom soup and sour cream. Mix well until everything is evenly combined. Add salt, pepper, and paprika to taste. If desired, stir in crushed red pepper flakes for a bit of heat.
  4. Combine Meat and Vegetables: Add the cooked ground beef back into the skillet and stir everything together until well mixed. Remove from heat.
  5. Assemble the Casserole: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer the beef and cabbage mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish and spread it out evenly.
  6. Add the Cheese: Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the top of the casserole.
  7. Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and the casserole is heated through.
  8. Serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your creamy, cheesy, and comforting casserole!

Notes

  • You can substitute cream of mushroom soup with cream of celery or cream of chicken soup for different flavor variations.
  • Use cheddar cheese for a sharper taste or mozzarella for a milder, creamier melt.
  • To add some heat, include the optional crushed red pepper flakes.
  • Make sure to drain excess fat from the ground beef to prevent a greasy casserole.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated for a quick meal later in the week.
