Ingredients
Scale
Onions
- 2 large yellow onions, sliced into 1/2-inch thick rings and separated
Batter and Coating
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 1/2 cups plain breadcrumbs (or panko for extra crunch)
Frying
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- Prepare the Onions: Peel and slice the onions into 1/2-inch thick rings. Carefully separate the individual rings and set them aside for coating.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, and paprika until evenly combined. This seasoned flour mixture forms the first layer of the coating.
- Make Wet Mixture: In a separate bowl, beat the egg and whisk in the whole milk, creating a smooth liquid batter for dredging the onion rings.
- Coat the Onion Rings: Dip each onion ring first into the seasoned flour mixture to coat well. Then transfer it into the egg and milk mixture, ensuring it’s fully moistened. Finally, dredge each ring thoroughly in the breadcrumbs until completely covered.
- Rest Coated Rings: Place the coated onion rings on a baking sheet and allow them to rest for 10 minutes. This helps the coating adhere better during frying.
- Heat the Oil: Pour about 2 inches of vegetable oil into a deep skillet or heavy-bottomed pot. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C), making sure it’s hot enough for frying.
- Fry the Onion Rings: Fry the rings in batches to avoid overcrowding, cooking each side for 2–3 minutes or until they turn golden brown and crispy.
- Drain and Serve: Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried onion rings and transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve hot with your preferred dipping sauce.
Notes
- For extra crispiness, opt for panko breadcrumbs instead of plain breadcrumbs.
- Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or dried herbs to the breadcrumbs for an enhanced flavor profile.
- To make ahead, coat onion rings and freeze them uncooked. Fry them straight from frozen for convenience.
