Description

This creamy roasted jalapeno salsa blends smoky heat with smooth tangy flavors, making it a perfect dip or condiment. Roasting the jalapenos intensifies their flavor and adds a subtle smokiness, while the sour cream, mayonnaise, and buttermilk create a rich, luscious texture balanced with fresh lime juice and garlic.

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients

  • 6 fresh jalapeno peppers, stems removed
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional, to taste)
  • Fresh cilantro, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Roast the Jalapenos: Begin by roasting the jalapeno peppers to enhance their flavor. You can do this on a grill, under a broiler, or directly over a gas flame. Roast them until their skins are blistered and charred, about 10–15 minutes, turning occasionally for even roasting.
  2. Steam the Roasted Jalapenos: Place the roasted jalapenos in a bowl and cover with plastic wrap or a lid. Let them sit for about 10 minutes to allow the skins to steam, which will make peeling easier.
  3. Peel and Prepare the Jalapenos: After steaming, peel off the charred skins. Rinse under cold water if needed to remove skin bits. Cut peppers in half and remove seeds for a milder salsa or leave some seeds for extra heat.
  4. Combine Ingredients: In a blender or food processor, add the roasted jalapenos, sour cream, mayonnaise, buttermilk, lime juice, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and sugar if using.
  5. Blend to Desired Texture: Blend the mixture until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding more buttermilk for a thinner salsa or blend less for a thicker texture.
  6. Season to Taste: Taste the blended salsa and adjust seasoning with extra salt, lime juice, or sugar to balance the flavors perfectly.
  7. Garnish: Transfer salsa to a serving bowl and garnish with freshly chopped cilantro if desired.
  8. Chill: Chill the salsa in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving to let the flavors meld.

Notes

  • Roasting jalapenos over an open flame or broiler adds a delicious smoky flavor.
  • Adjust the heat by including or removing seeds from the jalapenos.
  • Sugar is optional but can help balance the acidity and heat.
  • Use fresh cilantro garnish to add a herbaceous brightness.
  • Serve chilled for the best flavor experience.
