Scale
Ingredients
- 1 (16-ounce) package frozen pierogies, any variety
- 1 pound smoked sausage, sliced into rounds
- 1 (10.5-ounce) can cream of mushroom soup
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 2 tablespoons butter
- Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Slow Cooker: Spray the inside of your slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking during cooking.
- Sauté Aromatics and Sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, and sauté for 3–4 minutes until softened and fragrant. Add the sliced smoked sausage and cook for an additional 2–3 minutes until lightly browned.
- Make the Sauce: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese, black pepper, and smoked paprika. Mix until all ingredients are well blended.
- Layer the Ingredients: Place half of the frozen pierogies in an even layer at the bottom of the slow cooker. Spoon half of the cooked sausage and onion mixture over the pierogies, then pour half of the creamy soup mixture on top. Repeat layering with the remaining pierogies, sausage mixture, and sauce.
- Cook: Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 4–5 hours or until the casserole is heated through, bubbly, and the pierogies are tender.
- Finish and Serve: Garnish with chopped fresh parsley, if desired, before serving hot. Enjoy your comforting pierogi casserole!
Notes
- You can substitute kielbasa or turkey sausage for a lighter or different flavor profile.
- For extra depth and texture, add chopped bell peppers or mushrooms to the sautéed sausage and onion.
- Be sure to spray the slow cooker well to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
- This dish is excellent for make-ahead meals and reheats well.
