Ingredients
Scale
Cookies
- 1 box devil’s food cake mix (15.25 oz)
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- Orange food coloring gel (a few drops)
- Black food coloring gel (a few drops)
Coating
- Powdered sugar (for coating)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ease cleanup.
- Make Dough: In a large bowl, combine the devil’s food cake mix, vegetable oil, and eggs. Mix thoroughly until a consistent dough forms.
- Divide and Color Dough: Divide the dough into two equal portions. Add a few drops of orange food coloring to one portion and a few drops of black food coloring to the other. Mix each until the color is even throughout.
- Form Cookie Balls: Take about a tablespoon of dough from each colored portion and roll them together into one ball, combining the two colors. Repeat with remaining dough to make multiple balls.
- Coat with Powdered Sugar: Roll each dough ball thoroughly in powdered sugar until fully covered.
- Arrange on Baking Sheet: Place the sugar-coated dough balls on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them apart to allow for spreading during baking.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the cookies spread and develop their signature crinkled tops.
- Cool: Remove cookies from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before serving.
Notes
- Ensure the dough is mixed well to incorporate the food coloring evenly for vibrant colors.
- Do not overcrowd the baking sheet to prevent cookies from merging.
- Use a parchment paper or silicone mat for easy release and cleanup.
- Cookies will be soft when warm but will firm up as they cool.
