Description

This Instant Pot Wild Rice recipe offers a simple and efficient way to prepare perfectly cooked wild rice with minimal effort. Using a pressure cooker significantly reduces the traditional cooking time while delivering tender, fluffy grains. The recipe is adaptable with options for vegetable broth or water, making it a versatile base for various dishes.

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients

  • 1 cup wild rice (not a blend)
  • 1 ½ cups vegetable broth (or water)
  • 1 Tbsp. butter (or oil)
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Rinse the Rice: Place the wild rice in a fine mesh strainer and rinse under cool running water for 1-2 minutes to remove any debris and excess starch, ensuring cleaner, fluffier rice.
  2. Add Ingredients to Instant Pot: Combine rinsed rice, vegetable broth (or water), butter (or oil), and salt directly into a 6-quart Instant Pot. Stir gently to distribute the butter and salt evenly among the rice and liquid.
  3. Set and Cook: Secure the lid on the Instant Pot and make sure the pressure release valve is sealed. Select the high pressure setting and cook for 28 minutes for firmer rice or 30 minutes for a softer texture.
  4. Natural Pressure Release: Once the cooking time finishes, allow the Instant Pot to naturally release pressure for 10 minutes to continue cooking the rice gently and prevent it from drying out.
  5. Drain Excess Liquid: After the natural release, carefully open the lid. If there’s any excess liquid remaining, pour the contents into the fine mesh strainer to drain off the extra liquid, leaving perfectly cooked wild rice ready to serve.

Notes

  • Adjust cooking time between 28 to 30 minutes depending on your texture preference for firmer or softer rice.
  • You can substitute vegetable broth with water for a milder flavor or to reduce sodium content.
  • Adding butter or oil enhances richness but can be omitted for a lighter dish.
  • Use the natural pressure release method to avoid splattering and to allow the rice to finish cooking gently.
  • This wild rice recipe pairs well with stir-fries, salads, soups, and as a side dish for poultry or fish.
