Description

Enjoy the taste of Ireland with this hearty and wholesome Irish Brown Bread recipe. Made with a blend of whole wheat and all-purpose flours, buttermilk, and a touch of sweetness, this traditional bread is perfect for breakfast or as a side for soups and stews.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons rolled oats (plus more for topping)

Wet Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar or honey
  • 1 ¾ cups buttermilk (plus more as needed)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven and prepare the pan: Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, baking soda, salt, rolled oats, and brown sugar (or honey).
  3. Add the wet ingredients: Pour in the buttermilk and melted butter, stirring until the dough forms. Add more buttermilk if needed.
  4. Bake the bread: Transfer the dough to the loaf pan, sprinkle with oats, and bake for 35-40 minutes until golden and cooked through.
  5. Cool and serve: Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Enhance the flavor by using molasses instead of brown sugar or honey.
  • This bread freezes well when tightly wrapped.
