Ingredients
Scale
Mushrooms
- 12 medium cremini or white mushrooms
Filling
- 6 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 tablespoons chopped green onions or chives
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
Topping & Cooking
- 3 tablespoons panko breadcrumbs
- 1 tablespoon olive oil or melted butter
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it’s hot and ready for baking the stuffed mushrooms.
- Prepare Mushrooms: Gently clean the mushrooms with a damp paper towel and carefully remove the stems. Set the caps aside and finely chop the stems if you plan to use them in the filling.
- Make Filling: In a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, minced garlic, grated Parmesan cheese, chopped green onions, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly to blend all flavors.
- Sauté Mushroom Stems: If using chopped mushroom stems, sauté them in a little olive oil over medium heat until tender and fragrant. Then, fold the sautéed stems into the cream cheese mixture.
- Stuff Mushrooms: Using a spoon or piping bag, fill each mushroom cap with the cream cheese mixture, pressing the filling gently to ensure it stays in place.
- Add Topping: Sprinkle panko breadcrumbs evenly over the stuffed mushrooms, then drizzle with olive oil or dot with melted butter to enhance browning and crispiness.
- Arrange for Baking: Place the stuffed mushrooms on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or on a wire rack to allow even heat circulation.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes, or until the breadcrumb topping is golden brown and the mushrooms are tender.
- Serve: Remove from oven and serve warm. Garnish with extra chives or herbs if desired for added freshness and color.
Notes
- Use cremini mushrooms for a richer flavor or white mushrooms for a milder taste.
- For a vegetarian option, ensure Parmesan cheese is free of animal rennet.
- Sautéing the stems enhances the filling by adding a deeper mushroom flavor and softer texture.
- Using a piping bag makes stuffing easier and neater, but a spoon works fine too.
- For a gluten-free version, substitute panko breadcrumbs with gluten-free breadcrumbs.
- Serve these stuffed mushrooms as a warm appetizer at parties or as a side dish for dinner.
