Description

Indulge in a decadent breakfast treat with this S’mores French Toast recipe. Layers of Nutella, marshmallows, and golden French toast come together to create a gooey, chocolatey delight that’s quick and easy to make. Perfect for a weekend brunch or special occasion, this recipe transforms classic s’mores into a warm, comforting sandwich using a simple stovetop technique.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread & Egg Mixture

  • 4 slices white sandwich bread, preferably stale
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1 tbsp butter

Fillings & Toppings

  • Nutella, generously spread
  • 16 marshmallows, halved horizontally
  • Additional marshmallows for topping (optional)
  • Chocolate sauce for drizzling (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Egg Mixture: In a shallow dish large enough to lay the bread flat, whisk together the egg and milk until well combined.
  2. Spread Nutella: Generously spread Nutella on all four slices of bread, covering each slice fully with a thick layer.
  3. Add Marshmallows to Bread: Place the marshmallow halves on two of the Nutella-covered slices, with the sticky, cut side facing up.
  4. Heat Butter: In a pan over medium-high heat, melt the butter and allow it to heat up, preparing for cooking the sandwiches.
  5. Dip & Place Bottom Slice: Take the marshmallow-topped slices and quickly dip the bottom side (the side without Nutella or marshmallows) into the egg mixture, then carefully place them into the heated pan.
  6. Dip & Add Top Slices: Dip the remaining two slices of bread into the egg mixture on the side without Nutella, then place each slice Nutella-side down atop the marshmallow-topped bread in the pan, forming a sandwich with the Nutella sides facing inward and the dipped sides facing out.
  7. Press Sandwich Gently: Using a spatula, press down lightly on the sandwiches to help heat penetrate through to the marshmallows, ensuring they melt without oozing out. Avoid pressing too hard to keep the filling intact.
  8. Cook One Side: Cook the sandwiches for about 2 1/2 to 3 minutes, or until the bottom is golden brown and crispy.
  9. Flip and Cook Other Side: Carefully flip the sandwiches and cook the other side for about 2 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
  10. Check Marshmallow Softness: The marshmallows inside should be very soft and gooey; if they aren’t oozing out, they will continue melting from the residual heat.
  11. Serve Immediately: Serve hot, optionally topped with extra marshmallows and a drizzle of chocolate sauce for added indulgence.

Notes

  • Using stale bread helps the bread hold the egg mixture without becoming soggy.
  • Press sandwiches gently while cooking to prevent marshmallows from leaking out.
  • If you don’t have Nutella, any chocolate-hazelnut spread can be used or melted chocolate spread.
  • For best results, cook on medium-high heat to get a golden crust without burning.
  • Serve immediately as the marshmallows are best enjoyed warm and gooey.
