Description

A comforting and savory wonton soup recipe featuring tender pork-filled wontons simmered in a flavorful chicken broth with aromatic seasonings and fresh greens. Perfect for a light yet satisfying meal in just 35 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Wontons

  • 30 wonton wrappers
  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper

For the Soup

  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
  • 1 cup bok choy or spinach, chopped
  • 1 green onion, thinly sliced (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Wonton Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground pork, finely chopped green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, grated ginger, salt, and white pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly incorporated to create the wonton filling.
  2. Fill and Fold the Wontons: Place a wonton wrapper on a clean surface. Scoop about one teaspoon of filling into the center of the wrapper. Wet the edges lightly with water, then fold the wrapper over to form a triangle or desired shape, pressing edges firmly to seal and prevent leakage.
  3. Prepare the Soup Broth: In a large pot over medium heat, add the chicken broth, minced garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, and white pepper. Bring the broth to a gentle boil, allowing the flavors to meld.
  4. Cook the Wontons: Carefully drop the prepared wontons into the boiling broth. Cook for about 5 minutes or until the wontons float to the surface and the pork filling is cooked through.
  5. Add Greens to the Soup: Stir in the chopped bok choy or spinach and simmer for an additional 2 minutes until the greens are tender but still vibrant.
  6. Serve: Ladle the hot wonton soup into bowls, garnish with thinly sliced green onions, and serve immediately for best flavor and warmth.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground pork with ground chicken or turkey for a leaner option.
  • Fresh wonton wrappers work best, but frozen wrappers can be used if thawed properly.
  • Ensure edges of wonton wrappers are sealed well to prevent filling from escaping during cooking.
  • Adjust seasoning in broth according to taste; add a splash of soy sauce or a pinch of salt if needed.
  • For an extra kick, add a few drops of chili oil or sprinkle with white pepper before serving.
